Just because I homeschool, it doesn't change the fact that I have to do the grocery shopping or the house cleaning. I have to pay the bills and make sure we are at appointments on time.
But, our days are busy.
Just this past Tuesday, Austin finished Kindergarten math!!! He has done two workbooks of it and he understands and knows the concepts they were teaching!!! WOOT WOOT!!! We celebrated with a little prize of a mini "Simon" and cookies for dessert! See all his gold start stickers? He was very happy and proud of himself for doing 3 days worth of work to finish in one day so he could move forward!
We had just finished up our in house homeschool work and Cody went outside to play. He came running in just moments later, "Mama!!! There's something outside you HAVE TO SEE!!!"
Oh my! They were setting a brand new power pole in place of an old rotten one! He had seen the crane from our backyard! It was the biggest one we had ever seen in our neighborhood and we stopped everything to watch! We counted 3 men on the pole (only 2 pictured) who were climbing in their hooks. Cody noticed each of them had a tool belt and all their tools hanging from it. Observant little guy he is! We watched the crane boom out and in and lift a transformer and send it back to the guys on the pole. We watched them pull the wires from one side of the street to the other so they could reconnect them. At one point, Audrey was done. She went back in the house with Great Grandma and Davey and they read books together. Later, it was just Cody and I. We walked across the street to the park and watched as they folded the crane up. We talked about the outriggers and how they keep the truck stable. He watched the hydraulics of the outriggers move up and down. We watched how the crane operator moved around and kept his eyes on the crane. Cody noticed that the front wheels of the crane were "way high off the ground." And indeed they were. We stayed until they were moving their counter weights to the flat bed truck nearby. And yes, from the picture below, you can see they were barefoot through it all. Who needs shoes when it's almost 80 outside? Overall, a GREAT experience for our kids, especially Cody who wants to be like Papa even more now!
Recently, I've cleaned out my shed with the amazing help of my wonderful hubby! I have a workspace again! I'm trying to stop calling it a shed and call it my workshop, because that's what I really want it to be. Plus a secondary homeschool area with a desk and activities I have out there. But, I needed to warp my 24" rigid heddle loom. I have multiple woven projects in my head that I need to translate to my loom and work up! I needed help with this one. I have never warped my loom out there and I was having a hard time with the cone of cotton yarn I was using. I needed to find a way to make it spin instead of come off the spool from the top. So, I found a screwdriver long enough, but no where to hook it up to. (Psst, Mark, I have a simple way to fix this if we get the right equipment....just a simple honey do please!!) Anyway, Austin came in about the time I was ready to give up and he said, "If I hold it will it spin around the screwdriver and not my hands?" Yep! It sure will my boy! He held my cone of yarn the whole time. It's not a 5 minute process. More like a 20-30 minute process just for this first step.
You can see Austin sitting here holding my yarn for me and the 2nd picture is a pic in progress of the warping. Once I finished with this step, Mark actually helped me keep tension while I wound it on. Then the next step of threading it has to happen. Why do I show you this on a homeschooling page? Because my kids will be learning the skills of weaving as we go. The state of CA says I have to teach fine arts. Guess what? Weaving is a fine art and I bet my kids will be weaving their own items on their own very soon!
That was all just one day! Plus eating, food preparation, naps, diaper changes, laundry rotations, etc, etc, etc.
Just because I homeschool does not mean I sit around and watch TV or am on the computer all day long. My days are busy. But a really great busy with my kids!
Tell me about your great busy days!
